HPE CloudOps vs the Competition: Where the Suite Wins and Where It Doesn’t

Part 2 of the SilverX HPE CloudOps series. Read the suite overview first if you haven’t — this post assumes you know the three pillars.

One suite, three fights

Here’s the thing that makes evaluating the HPE CloudOps Software suite awkward: it doesn’t have a single competitor. It competes on three fronts at once — orchestration, observability, and data protection — and each front has entrenched specialists who do only that, and do it well. So “is HPE CloudOps good?” is really three questions wearing one trench coat.

This post takes each front honestly: who HPE is up against, where the suite genuinely wins, and where a best-of-breed point tool still beats it. I’m not going to hand you a verdict — the right answer depends heavily on your estate and your VMware renewal math. But by the end you’ll know which questions to ask.

Front 1 — Orchestrate: HPE Morpheus vs the virtualization/CMP field

Up against: Broadcom/VMware Cloud Foundation + Aria, Nutanix (Prism + AHV), Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization.

This is the loudest fight, and it’s happening because of Broadcom. The VMware acquisition reshaped licensing toward per-core and bundled packaging, and a lot of enterprises started shopping — not always to leave, sometimes just for leverage. HPE walked in with a credible KVM-based hypervisor (HVM) and, crucially, per-socket licensing pitched directly at that pain: on high-core-count CPUs, per-socket pricing can undercut per-core dramatically. That’s the single strongest card in the whole suite.

Where Morpheus genuinely wins: the economics on dense modern CPUs, and a real multi-hypervisor story — it manages VMware ESXi and HVM side by side from one console, so you migrate at your own pace instead of a forced re-platform. For an enterprise mid-renewal, “keep vSphere running while you move workloads deliberately” is a very different proposition from “rip and replace.”

Where the incumbents still win: VMware’s ecosystem depth and operational maturity are a decade-plus ahead — DRS, mature vSAN, a vast partner and skills base. Nutanix has a polished HCI story and a loyal base. Red Hat wins where the future is containers-first. Morpheus/HVM is younger; some advanced features are still maturing, which is exactly what the VM Essentials track of this series will test feature by feature.

Front 2 — Observe: HPE OpsRamp vs the observability field

Up against: Datadog, Dynatrace, ServiceNow ITOM, and Grafana/Prometheus stacks.

Where OpsRamp genuinely wins: hybrid and on-prem breadth. The SaaS-native observability leaders were born in the public cloud and are strongest there; OpsRamp’s heritage is hybrid IT operations — discovery and monitoring across on-prem infrastructure, network gear, and multi-cloud in one place. Its GenAI operations copilot and AIOps event-correlation are pitched at the real enterprise pain of alert noise and slow root-cause. And there’s a newer angle worth watching: observability for AI workloads — monitoring agents and LLMs, and governing token-based consumption — which is squarely where HPE is steering it.

Where the specialists still win: Datadog and Dynatrace are extraordinarily deep in cloud-native and APM, with enormous integration catalogs and polish that come from being pure-play observability companies. If your estate is cloud-native-first, the incumbents are hard to beat on depth. OpsRamp’s bet is breadth-across-hybrid over depth-in-cloud-native — a good bet for classic enterprise estates, a weaker one for a born-in-the-cloud shop.

Front 3 — Protect: HPE Zerto vs the data-protection field

Up against: Veeam, Commvault, Rubrik, and array-based replication.

Where Zerto genuinely wins: continuous data protection. Zerto’s journal-based CDP targets near-zero RPO and fast, orchestrated failover — a genuinely different technology from periodic snapshot backup. For disaster recovery and, increasingly, ransomware resilience (rewind to a point seconds before an attack), that architecture is a real advantage, and its cloud/workload-mobility story is strong.

Where the specialists still win: Veeam’s sheer breadth and market presence are formidable — it protects almost everything and is often already in the building. Commvault and Rubrik bring deep data-management and security-focused features. Zerto is superb at DR and CDP specifically; it’s not trying to be your one backup tool for every workload, so in a shop standardized on Veeam, Zerto is a complement as much as a replacement.

The real question: suite vs best-of-breed

Strip away the three fronts and the actual decision is philosophical:

The case for the suite is coherence and economics: fewer vendors, aligned pricing, and — if the integration is real — less glue code. The case against is that a determined best-of-breed stack will out-depth it in any single lane.

And that phrase — if the integration is real — is the crux. A suite is only worth choosing over point tools when the pieces genuinely reinforce each other: Morpheus provisioning that OpsRamp auto-discovers and monitors, Zerto protection you can invoke from the same operating model. That’s the claim I’ll be pressure-testing across this whole series, especially in the OpsRamp and Zerto tracks.

So who should look at it?

  • Strong fit: enterprises with a big VMware estate facing a painful renewal, a hybrid/on-prem-heavy footprint, and a preference for consolidating vendors. The per-socket economics plus phased migration is a genuinely compelling combination.
  • Weaker fit: cloud-native-first shops already deep on Datadog/Dynatrace and standardized on a backup tool they like — here the suite has to displace strong incumbents in their best lanes.

There’s no universal answer, and anyone who gives you one is selling something. What this series will give you instead is the working detail — how each piece actually behaves — so you can run the comparison against your estate.
